What is the purpose of trek? During Trek, you will have the opportunity to experience in a small way what it was like to be a handcart pioneer. We hope your experience will help you appreciate and learn from the sacrifice these pioneers made for the gospel as you relate their experiences and examples to your own lives.
Where will it be held? Parrie Haynes Ranch in Killeen, TX (North of Austin and South of Waco). About 3 ½ hours away.
When is Registration Due? Jan 31, 2020
Why does the Registration and Medical Release Form need to be turned in now? Plans are made based on the total number of people attending. Supplies need to be ordered based on the total number of people attending. (Food, carts, bandanas, flags etc.) Food Specialists need to be aware of food allergies as they plan daily menus. Medical personnel need to be prepared for trekkers’ medical and special considerations.
Who can participate in trek? Youth who are 14 years and older by the end of 2020.
What Medical provisions are provided at Trek? Several medical professionals will be attending and helping as needed. A medical center will be set up for medical needs. Each handcart will be equipped with a small first aid kit. An ice chest will be provided for medication that needs to be refrigerated. All participants need to have a signed medical form.
Will there be bathroom facilities on the trail? Portable bathrooms will be available along the trail and at each campsite.
What are the sleeping accommodations at Trek? Each Trek family will have three tents: One for Young Men, one for Young Women, and one for Ma/Pa.
Will water be readily available for drinking to prevent dehydration? Yes. Trek participants need to have their own water bottles to keep with them at all times. Each handcart will have a 5-gallon water container to re-fill personal water bottles. All participants will be encouraged to drink water along the trail to prevent dehydration.
Is dehydration a problem at Trek? It can be if participants do not drink enough water. The slightest bit of dehydration will cause a decrease in your physical performance and FUN. By the time you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated. The more dehydrated the body becomes, the less efficient it is at cooling itself.
Why are electronic devices not allowed on Trek? To truly feel the Spirit, we need to tune out all other distractions. We will have photographers at Trek and all photos and videos will be shared.
Why is it recommended that we wear glasses instead of contacts? Heat, wind, and blowing dust may make wearing contact lenses uncomfortable. Contacts are expensive and can be easily lost, especially in the above conditions.
Are participants asked to wear pioneer-style clothing on Trek and where can I get clothing? Trek participants are responsible to obtain their own pioneer-style clothing. Check out the “Clothing” tab and packing list on our trek website for resources. Goodwill or other Thrift stores can be a great resource for pants, shirts & skirts. Our stake has a clothing committee for trek.
How will participants be transported to the Trek site? Each ward will be responsible for providing transportation to and from the site.
Will youth be divided into families while on Trek? Through a process involving fasting and prayer, the youth will be divided into families with Mas and Pas. Youth will find out who is in their family when they arrive at trek.
How much will Trek cost? There is no cost to attend. However, you will need specific clothing and supplies so please start gathering, purchasing or borrowing ASAP.
